Wednesday, November 26, 2025 HAMLET, Ind. — The Triton Trojans wasted no time announcing their arrival in their season and conference opener, dismantling the Oregon-Davis Bobcats 68–35 at The Den behind a balanced offensive attack and relentless defensive pressure. The Hoosier North Athletic Conference showdown marked the start of the 2025-26 campaign for Triton, while Oregon-Davis fell to 0-2 after dropping their season opener to West Central the previous night. "Give OD some credit," Triton head coach Jason Groves said. "They came out and played hard, and we knew they were going to do that. They play hard, a little unorthodox in some of the things they do defensively and offensively." Hot Start, Early Rust The Trojans started hot, hitting their first two three-pointers early. But first-game rust showed in the form of turnovers—Triton committed 10 in the opening half alone. "We shot the ball well early, hit those first two threes, I thought that was a good sign," Groves said. "But just too many turnovers first half. I think that first-game rust is part of that. That's where we need to get better." Overmyer Dominates the Paint Despite the early turnover issues, senior forward Jayden Overmyer provided a steady interior presence. The 6'0" forward recorded a double-double with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting and a game-high 10 rebounds—seven on the offensive glass. "That's one thing we talked about with Jaden—he's athletic as can be, he can rebound, and he really did that tonight on both ends, offensive end and defensive end," Groves said. "I liked his aggressiveness." Overmyer is adjusting to a new role this season, transitioning from primarily playing guard to manning the five position in Triton's frontcourt. "He's on a learning curve," Groves noted. "He played mainly guard, and just some of the nuances of being the five-man and under the basket, he has some things to learn. But overall, he did a great job tonight. He was aggressive, and we just got to work on little things—finish and play off two feet, play balanced. Just little things that we can take care of easily." Balanced Attack Overwhelms Bobcats Senior guard Julian Swanson led all scorers with 18 points on an efficient 6-of-11 shooting performance. The four-year starter knocked down three triples and hit three of his six free throw attempts while chipping in three rebounds and two assists. The Trojans' offensive efficiency was a testament to their ball movement and unselfish play. Triton recorded 12 assists on 24 made field goals, with contributions coming from throughout the roster. Senior point guard Landon Patrick orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out two assists while adding five points and a team-high five steals. Sophomore Brady Wood provided scoring punch off the bench with seven points, matching senior Gage Riffle's output. Sophomore Jamison Swanson, the younger brother of Julian, made an immediate impact in his varsity debut with five points, four rebounds, and a team-high three assists in 18 minutes of action. "It's huge," Groves said of the team's depth. "Right now, our bench is inexperienced—young guys coming off the bench that haven't played varsity. Jamison's one of our first subs in, and he's just learning the speed of the game and how to maneuver at the varsity level. These kids are just going to keep getting better as the season progresses." The coach emphasized the importance of getting younger players meaningful minutes early in the season. "That's why we want to get them involved and get them out there playing, learning what we do, learning how we defend," Groves explained. "I feel comfortable playing those guys if need be. It's a nice luxury to have, and those kids got to be patient while still working hard. Be patient, but keep working hard in practice, keep getting better. Your time will come." Defense Sets the Tone Triton's defensive pressure was relentless from the start, forcing 21 Oregon-Davis turnovers while recording 12 steals as a team. The Trojans' length and activity disrupted the Bobcats' offensive flow, holding them to just 33.3% shooting from the field and a frigid 3-of-14 from three-point range. Oregon-Davis was led by DJ Garland's 13 points, but the junior guard struggled with efficiency, converting just 5-of-11 from the field while committing five turnovers. Jason Blackburn added 10 points in the losing effort. Controlling the Glass The Trojans dominated the boards, out-rebounding Oregon-Davis 38–23. Triton's 48.5% offensive rebounding rate led to 12 second-chance points, a key factor in building their commanding lead. The Bobcats battled on the glass, but Triton's size and athleticism proved too much. Looking Ahead The victory marks a promising start to what the Trojans hope will be a special season. With a deep roster featuring five experienced seniors and promising young talent, Triton appears poised to build on last year's 23-5 campaign that ended with an Elite Eight appearance in the Semi-State round. Despite the win, Groves knows there's work to be done, particularly in ball security. The 15 turnovers—10 in the first half alone—will be a point of emphasis moving forward as the Trojans prepare to host Plymouth on December 2. • TRITON 68, OREGON-DAVIS 35 At The Den Triton 13 15 19 21 - 68 OD 8 8 4 15 - 35 TRITON: Julian Swanson 6-11 3-6 18; Jayden Overmyer 6-13 1-5 15; Brady Wood 2-7 2-2 7; Gage Riffle 2-5 2-2 7; Landon Patrick 2-4 1-2 5; Jamison Swanson 2-5 0-0 5; Jaidyn Arnett 2-2 0-0 5; Isaac Quintana 1-1 1-1 3; Max Johnson 1-2 0-0 2; Levi McFarland 0-1 1-2 1.
