"Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right." – Henry Ford The phrasing during the week had been simple. “I know I can do it!” Fresh off winning an Indoor State Championship in 3200 Meter Run, Katy Zang was headed to New Balance Indoor Nationals to compete against the best the country had to offer and to take a shot at history. Katy believed two things: 1) She could win the race and 2) She could set the national record in the Indoor 2 Mile Run. Katy traveled to Boston to run against an elite group of runners. Much like the week before, she took a lead early. One difference this week was the inside rail light, a light displaying the pace of the High School National Record set by Mary Cain in 2013. Katy stayed in front of the light and her competition by a solid margin. But as the race went on, the light got closer. It seemed like Katy was going to win the race and become a New Balance Indoor National Champion, but the record was in question. Katy drew strength from within though to finish strong, win the race, and set the national record beating the old record by 1.6 seconds. The crowd was on their feet and Katy’s expression said it all. Yes, she was shocked and ecstatic in the historic feat she had accomplished. But the confidence she had expressed before she had left was there in her eyes. She knew she could it and she was right.
