In the Girls' Sectional competition at Marion High School Tuesday night, the Lady Knights track team fought their way to a 6th place overall finish in a competitive 13 team field. Outstanding performances on the night in the 4x800m Relay, 4x400m Relay, and HJ extended the Lady Knights season deeper into the state tournament series. Battling against weather and a highly competitive field of 800 meter runners, the women's 4x800 meter Relay Team of Jaiya Corn, Hailey Collins, Paige Nelson, and Lola Winer raced to a hard fought, come from behind, nail-biter finish to capture the title of Sectional Champions. Leading off the relay, senior Jaiya Corn battled through a fast first leg splitting her best time ever with a 2:35, setting her teammates up in great position to continue the fight. Holding their ground through Leg 2 and 3 were Paige Nelson to Hailey Collins. In the final battle to the finish line, Lola Winer took the baton with the team sitting deep in 3rd place. Winer, pushing to catch up with the leaders, tucked in to ride on the heels of Bluffton's and Marion's top runners for the next 600 meters. With 200m to go in the 800 sprint, Winer began to move into position, waiting patiently for the right moment to make a move. Hitting the final turn, Winer slid into 2nd place and gradually moved to the outside as the 3 racers hit the homestretch. In a blazing footrace, Winer overtook Marion's anchor leg with a decisive win, setting a new team PR of 10:27.43. This is the 2nd year in a row that the Lady Knights have come home Sectional Champs in the 4x800m Relay. Also qualifying for Regionals with a great team performance was the 4x400m Relay Team.
