Fast Times for Southwood Cross Country

The Southwood Knights competed in the Marion Invitational at Indiana Wesleyan University Saturday morning. The Lady Knights started the full day of races at IWU's campus at 8:30 a.m with the boys following at 9:00. Cool temperatures and fast competition were key factors to solid performances by the Knights. The Lady Knights competed in a field of 22 teams with 119 runners. Leading the girls team with a strong performance from start to finish, was freshman Paige Nelson. Paige set a personal record (PR) of 21:25.2, finishing in a medal position by crossing the line in 11th place. Also finishing in a metal position was junior Hailey Collins placing 28th overall and setting a new PR of 22:45.0. Olivia Ranck (110th) and Makenna Hunter (114th and new PR) also raced for the Knights. In the boys race, the Knights competed in a field of 28 teams with 210 runners. Leading the way for the Knights was James Unger, racing to a new PR of 17:39.6 and finishing in medal position as the 26th runner to cross the finish line. After suffering through an injury setback, senior Luke Andrews was able to compete and finished 86th in a time of 19:27.5. Sophomore, Andrew Wright raced to a new PR of 20:54.8, taking a full minute of his previous best time and placing 142nd. Also setting a new PR of 24:20.4 was cross country newcomer Jericho Corn (188th), dropping more than 2 minutes of his previous time. The Knights will compete at the Blackford Invitational next Saturday, September 14th.
