Knights Win Sectional Opener on a Grady Dillon Walk Off

It came down to the wire on Thursday, as Southwood Varsity Knights grabbed the victory in walk-off fashion, 7-6, over Southern Wells Raiders. The game was tied at six in the bottom of the seventh when Grady Dillon singled, scoring one run. Dillon collected three hits in four at bats in the win. Dillon singled in the sixth inning, singled in the seventh inning, and singled in the fifth inning. Southern Wells Raiders got on the board in the top of the first inning after Jacob Gearheart homered to left field, and Robby Freimuth singled down the right field line, each scoring one run. Southern Wells Raiders extended their early lead with two runs in the top of the second thanks to RBI walks by Landon Johnson and Trey Slusher. Southwood Varsity Knights scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brandtson Sturgill drew a walk, scoring one run, Coan Holloway was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, and Dillon singled, scoring three runs. A double by Gearheart gave Southern Wells Raiders the lead, 6-5, in the top of the seventh. Southwood Varsity Knights jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning after Owen Davis singled to center field, and Dillon singled to left field, each scoring one run. Aiden Hawkins earned the win for Southwood Varsity Knights. The pitcher surrendered one hit and one run over two innings, striking out five and walking three. Peyton Bertsch took the loss for Southern Wells Raiders. The reliever went one inning, surrendering two runs on three hits, striking out one and walking one. Tripper Schnepp led things off on the bump for Southwood Varsity Knights. The pitcher allowed four hits and five runs (four earned) over five innings, striking out seven and walking four. Johnson stepped on the hill first for Southern Wells Raiders. The pitcher surrendered three hits and zero runs over five innings, striking out six and walking none. Southwood Varsity Knights amassed nine hits in the game. Davis, Ivan Ranck, and Schnepp each collected multiple hits for Southwood Varsity Knights. Schnepp stole two bases. Gearheart led Southern Wells Raiders with two runs batted in. The leadoff hitter went 2-for-5 on the day. Southern Wells Raiders had patience at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Brayden Williams, Bertsch, and Johnson led the team with two bases on balls each. Freimuth stole two bases.
