Southwood Varsity Knights With Tough Game Against Huntington North Varsity Vikings

Southwood Varsity Knights couldn't keep up with Huntington North Varsity Vikings and fell 17-2 on Friday. Huntington North Varsity Vikings jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after an error scored two runs, Averill hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Gerdes singled, scoring two runs. Huntington North Varsity Vikings scored five runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. Smock doubled, scoring three runs, an error scored one run, and a wild pitch scored one run. Huntington North Varsity Vikings added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Caley was struck by a pitch, Brooks walked, Funk hit a sacrifice fly, and Degitz singled down the right field line, each scoring one run. Pohler hit a solo home run to left field in the top of the fourth for the Huntington North Varsity Vikings. Huntington North Varsity Vikings scored two runs in the top of the fifth on a home run to center field by Pohler on an 0-2 count. Caley earned the win for Huntington North Varsity Vikings. The pitcher gave up three hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out two and walking one. Devore took the loss for Southwood Varsity Knights. The starting pitcher went two innings, allowing 12 runs (seven earned) on six hits, striking out one and walking four. Davis drove the middle of the lineup, leading Southwood Varsity Knights with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 3-for-3 on the day. Huntington North Varsity Vikings amassed 11 hits in the game. Gerdes and Smock were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected two hits for Huntington North Varsity Vikings. Smock led Huntington North Varsity Vikings with three runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-2 on the day. Southwood Varsity Knights will travel to Manchester for their next game on Monday.
