Lakers Earn Rivalry Victory in Double Dual Thriller The Spring Lake varsity volleyball team put together one of its most exciting performances of the season Tuesday night, defeating rival Fruitport in front of a spirited home crowd before narrowly falling in a three-set battle with Western Michigan Christian. The night opened with a statement win for the Lakers, who rallied after dropping the first set to claim a hard-fought victory over Fruitport (20-25, 26-24, 25-15, 25-23). Spring Lake’s energy and execution were on full display as they stormed through the final three sets, using smart ball placement and relentless effort to seal the rivalry win. In their second match, the Lakers went toe-to-toe with WMC in three straight sets that came down to the wire, with all ending 24-26. Even when trailing by 10 points in the third set, Spring Lake showed grit, storming back to nearly complete the comeback before the Warriors were able to edge them out. The night was filled with standout individual performances: Brooke St. George led the charge with 21 kills, 16 digs, and 3 aces. Lauren Meigs delivered 18 kills, 5 blocks, and 3 aces in a dominant two-way performance. Abbey Rogalski added 15 kills and 5 blocks at the net. Ashlynn O’Donnell distributed the offense with 34 assists and 2 aces, while Rileigh Fortuna contributed 24 assists of her own. Defensively, Zoe Winters was a rock with 33 digs, supported by Selah Kobylak (24 digs) and St. George (16 digs). Abbi Kozal was a force at the net with 5 blocks. The coaching staff praised the team for continuing the high-energy, smart play that first showed up last week and carried over into both matches tonight. The Lakers’ ability to respond under pressure and execute in big moments proved they are hitting their stride as conference play continues. Spring Lake (3-8-2, 0-3 OK-Blue) will return to action on Thursday, September 18, hosting Zeeland East at 6:00 p.m.
