MHSAA Summer Dead Period The MHSAA Summer Dead Period is a mandatory period designed to limit out-of-season athletic activities and ensure a fair and equitable start to the official fall sports season. Duration and Timing Member schools must designate seven (7) consecutive calendar days during the summer as their Dead Period. This period must occur after the school's final MHSAA tournament contest and before August 1. Saginaw United's 2026 Summer Dead Period is June 29 – July 5, 2026. Fourth of July While each school selects its own seven-day period, the MHSAA strongly recommends that the Dead Period include Independence Day (July 4) whenever possible. What Is Not Allowed During the Dead Period, all sport-related contact between school coaches and students in grades 7–12 is prohibited. This includes: Coaching or providing athletic instruction in any setting, including camps or clinics. Open gyms, open fields, conditioning programs, strength training, or weightlifting that are sponsored by the school or conducted by school coaches. Team meetings, practices, scrimmages, fundraisers, or other organized team activities. Use of school athletic facilities for school-related athletic activities, including student-organized workouts or practices. Exception Non-school organized baseball and softball programs (such as American Legion Baseball) that operate on a regular summer schedule may continue during the Dead Period, provided they are not conducted as school-sponsored activities. We appreciate everyone's cooperation in observing the MHSAA Summer Dead Period. Have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July as we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of American Independence!
