Saginaw United’s first varsity boys volleyball season came to an end Wednesday night at Midland High School, but not before the program added another milestone to an already historic year. In the first season recognized by the Michigan High School Athletic Association for postseason state tournament play, Saginaw United earned a Regional First Round victory before falling to Midland High School in the Regional Semifinal. The Chemics won the match in straight sets, 25-14, 27-25, and 25-9. Midland’s depth proved difficult for United to overcome, as the Chemics were able to rotate a full varsity and junior varsity bench throughout the night. Despite the loss, United continued to battle throughout the match, especially during a tightly contested second set that Midland narrowly claimed 27-25. Hayden Schilling led United at the net with eight kills while also contributing six blocks defensively. D’Royce Sparks controlled the front row for stretches of the match, recording 12 blocks against Midland’s attack. Defensively, Jaden Patterson delivered several momentum-saving plays with hustle and diving saves across the back line. Antonia Humes continued to fill multiple roles as United’s libero despite playing through a foot injury. Haynes Aris worked as the team’s lone setter, covering the court and helping generate the United offense throughout the evening. Gabriel Gilin provided a spark from the service line, recording seven aces after entering as a serving specialist. Senior Calvin Gray closed out his high school career with another steady all-around performance, contributing with his serving, blocking, and attacking at the net. Following the match, Head Coach Velazquez reflected on both the disappointment of the season ending and the growth shown by the program during its first year. “Where we started to where we finished is amazing,” said Velazquez. “The team has come a long ways and it is only their first season on a volleyball court. We have young players who are only going to get better.” Although the season ended one match short of a Regional Final appearance, Saginaw United’s inaugural campaign established a foundation for the future as boys volleyball continues to grow across Michigan.
