Bay City Central Ends Saginaw United’s District Tournament Run

Rainy conditions and a strong performance from Bay City Central proved too much for Saginaw United on Saturday, as Central claimed a 15-0 victory in three innings at Bay City John Glenn in the opening round of the 2026 MHSAA Division 1 District Baseball Tournament. The loss ends United’s district tournament hopes and drops the program to 1-21 overall on the season. Despite the final score, Saginaw United saw encouraging efforts from several young players. Dakari Sims, Jaylon Garcia, and De’QuayVion Shepard each reached base, while Shepard also added a stolen base. United Head Coach Nate Volk credited Bay City Central for its all-around performance. “Central is a very solid team,” Volk said. “I saw them a couple weeks ago on a scouting trip and knew we’d have a real tough time generating offense against them. They pitched well and played strong defense up the middle.” United entered the matchup hoping to lean on the development of sophomore pitcher Jamarion Vollmer and freshman Jayce Delgado. Volk said both players showed promise despite the lopsided result. “Both young men threw the ball well,” Volk said. “If we make some routine plays defensively in the first inning, we probably come to bat in the bottom half with the score still 0-0. Instead, we gave up a big inning early. But in terms of what we wanted from our pitchers right out of the gate, Jamarion more than delivered. His future is very bright. Jayce too. He is a tough competitor.” Saginaw United will close out the 2026 season Wednesday with a road doubleheader at Carrollton, a make-up from a rainout earlier this spring. Volk said the final week of the season will also serve as an important opportunity to begin laying the foundation for the future of the program. “This is going to be a very important week for United Baseball,” Volk said. “Our record shows we have areas that need major improvement moving forward. Right now, our focus is on building a stronger program culture and creating a team-first mentality. We want players who are committed to each other, committed to improvement, and committed to raising the standard for Saginaw United Baseball.” He added that the program plans to make changes aimed at strengthening accountability and supporting players who are fully invested in the future direction of the team. “We know our school and community deserve better,” Volk said. “Improving that starts with the commitment we make to each other as teammates.”
