History was made Wednesday night as the Saginaw United girls soccer team captured the first victory in program history with a thrilling 1-0 win over Carman-Ainsworth. Battling through cold and windy conditions, the Phoenix entered the match determined to reverse the outcome of a 6-1 loss to the Cavaliers just one month earlier. Their breakthrough came midway through the first half when Tantine Igirubuntu found the back of the net for the game’s lone goal, igniting celebrations on the United sideline and among the home supporters. While the offense provided the decisive moment, the Phoenix defense delivered a historic performance of its own. Goalkeeper Happiness Rukundo recorded the first shutout in school history, finishing with six key saves to preserve the victory. Time and again, Rukundo answered the challenge as Carman-Ainsworth pressed for the equalizer. The second half highlighted the discipline, determination, and teamwork that carried United to the landmark win. The Phoenix defense and midfield applied constant pressure, disrupted scoring opportunities, and battled relentlessly for possession while protecting the slim lead until the final whistle. More than just another result, the victory marked a defining moment for a growing program and a memory this team will carry for years to come. Saginaw United will now look to build on its momentum and make it two straight victories when the Phoenix host Caro on May 18 at 5 p.m. The evening will also serve as Senior Night, giving fans another special opportunity to celebrate the continued rise of the program.
