The Saginaw United girls’ soccer team took part in the first Saturday tournament in program history this weekend, competing against Bay City Central, Nouvel Catholic Central, and Swan Valley. Although the Phoenix did not come away with a victory in the three-match event, the team showed steady improvement throughout the day while facing the difficult challenge of playing without substitutes. Despite the demanding schedule, Saginaw United competed hard in each match before fatigue began to take its toll late in games. The team’s resilience, communication, and effort were evident as the tournament progressed. The highlight of the day came in the final match against Swan Valley, the eventual tournament champions. Midway through the second half, the Phoenix trailed just 4-0 while continuing to play with energy, positivity, and growing confidence. The girls made adjustments from earlier matches, improved their positioning and teamwork, and continued to battle despite exhausted legs. Goalkeeper Happiness Rukundo delivered one of the tournament’s top individual performances, earning praise from multiple coaches and referees for her strong play in net. Rukundo was supported by a determined defensive and midfield unit that worked tirelessly throughout the day to keep the Phoenix competitive. Saginaw United returns to action tonight against Heritage High School at 6 p.m. at White Pine Middle School.
