7th Inning Rally Keys Saginaw United's First Win

Saginaw United's seven-run 7th inning turned a three-run deficit into a 4-run lead and a 9-5 Saginaw Valley League South win over host Flint Carman-Ainsworth Wednesday evening. United (1-14, 1-9 in the SVL South) got the win behind sophomore Iggy Delgado, who pitched 6 innings and struck out 5 Cavalier hitters. Freshman Jayce Delgado then pitched a scoreless 7th inning in relief. Both pitchers played a part in United's second nine-run offensive effort of the season, the other coming in their season opener in late March against Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy. Iggy Delgado scored two runs, while Jayce Delgado drove in United's ninth run with a ground out. Also scoring runs for United were Dean Simpson III, Dakari Sims, Joshua Emeott, Jesse Medel, Austin Harris, and Philip Patton Jr. Sophomore Enrique Martinez II singled and scored — one of his two hits in the doubleheader. The decisive 7th inning saw United send 12 men to the plate as they worked patiently to populate the bases with runners. United's baserunners then began aggressively pressuring the Carman-Ainsworth defense into multiple mistakes, culminating in a two-run wild pitch to give United the lead for good. "In our practices, the guys have been focusing in on what is beating us and working hard to fix what can be fixed," United Head Coach Nate Volk said. "We've been better in each second meeting against the power programs of the league and then made meaningful improvements between Vassar on Friday and tonight." One improvement that played a pivotal part in United's win was better plate approaches. United's hitters sliced their called third strikes from 15 against Vassar to 4 against Carman-Ainsworth. "I want Saginaw United to have the identity of an efficient team that plays crisp and is a good watch for our local fans," Volk said. "Throwing strikes, limiting free bases with strong catching, and an energetic skilled defense in the back 7. The elements that keep you in every game. Iggy, Jayce pitching and Kari behind the plate covered two out of those three. Then we did well in limiting the back 7 errors." Keying the back 7 were strong defensive performances from Emeott at shortstop and freshman Aden Morgan filling in at second base in place of Jay Garcia. "Josh made a phenomenal play throwing across the diamond from his knees to record a big out and Aden made a couple key plays to help get us out of jams and hold the deficit to just the three runs," Volk said. "Aden is improving rapidly. No question the talent is there. His practice habits and attention to detail are where you can see the growth." In the nightcap, United fell behind 8-1 after one inning but continued to show improved plate approaches and swings throughout — with Jayce Delgado contributing a two-run double — and had drawn back within a run when play was suspended due to darkness with United trailing 9-8 in the bottom of the third. "Competing bell to bell relentlessly is what we want to be about at all times," Volk said. "I was more happy with how we dug in our heels and kept punching in both games than anything else. You can win a lot of games over time leaning into a practiced identity of playing efficient and fighting hard to win each moment. Those habits have very little to do with talent. And you aren't dependent on hitting gappers or striking everyone out."
