The Saginaw United baseball team continued to build toward the future Wednesday afternoon, taking on Davison Cardinals on the road. While the final score favored Davison, United used the game as another opportunity to develop key skills and gain valuable experience against strong competition. On the mound, Iggy Delgado delivered a steady performance, working effectively with catcher Dakari Sims to manage the Cardinals’ running game. The duo, along with relief pitchers Austin Harris and Jay Garcia, executed multiple pick-off moves and forced several rundowns—highlighting the team’s growing awareness and communication on defense. Head Coach Nate Volk praised the team’s preparation and progress, particularly behind the plate. “Kari and our catchers really focused on communication with the pitchers in practice,” Volk said. “You can see that work paying off. Our pitchers are getting more comfortable with their moves, and our fielders are starting to read situations better. That’s encouraging to see.” Delgado also contributed as United’s leadoff hitter, continuing to show consistency at the plate while competing against a talented Davison lineup. Defensively, he added a strong play in the outfield, while teammates like Dean Simpson demonstrated improved instincts in the field. United found ways to get on base throughout the game, with contributions from Jay Garcia, Aden Morgan, and Simpson. In the outfield, senior Jesse Medel recorded three putouts, helping anchor the defense. Coach Volk emphasized that, while the scoreboard may not yet reflect it, the team’s improvement is evident. “We’re seeing growth in a lot of areas,” Volk said. “Our guys are putting in the work, and it’s starting to show in how they compete and execute. That’s what we’re focused on building.” The program also received positive feedback from Davison’s coaching staff following the game, reinforcing the progress being made. Now, United turns its attention to continued development as the season moves forward. The team is set to return to practice before traveling to face Carrollton Cavaliers for a Friday doubleheader. With a focus on teamwork, effort, and steady improvement, Saginaw United remains committed to growing stronger with each game. “Stick together, play for each other, and keep working,” Volk said. “That’s our focus every day.”
