The Saginaw United Boys and Girls Track & Field teams competed at the Freeland Invitational on Saturday, April 11, continuing to show steady progress early in the season. The boys team finished 10th out of 14 teams, while the girls placed 10th out of 15 teams. Despite the team standings, the meet featured several encouraging performances, including multiple top-eight finishes and a strong number of personal bests. Junior Blake Jones led the boys with a first-place finish in the high jump, clearing 6’6”, a mark he has consistently reached this season. “Blake Jones is continuing on his All-State high jump performance from last year. He is consistently hitting a season best of 6’6”,” said Coach Rhoden. Senior Jamarion Goodman also earned a medal, placing second in the 400 meters (51.37), and helped the 4x800 relay team finish fourth overall. In the field events, senior Ssante Ramsey placed sixth in the shot put (44’7”), while Larry Austin added an eighth-place finish in the discus with a personal-best throw of 107’0”. Saginaw United also saw contributions from younger athletes. Freshman Tieriol Moore placed fifth in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 23.76, while Kaiden Coleman earned a top-eight finish in the same event (24.05, PB). “I cannot forget about Samuel Richardson in the high jump and Kaiden Coleman in the 200 meters,” said Coach Greene, also noting Richardson’s sixth-place finish. Sophomore Silas Hampton was another standout, earning a medal in both hurdle events. “Sophomore Silas Hampton medaled in the 110m and 300m hurdles. That is awesome for being only a 10th grader,” Coach Greene added. On the girls side, sophomore Jailey Jackson highlighted the field events with a fourth-place finish in the shot put, setting a personal best of 30’7.75”. “Goodman and Ramsey placed and received medals. As a sophomore, Jailey Jackson did a fantastic job in the shot put placing fourth,” said Coach Rhoden. Additional top-four performances came from My’Kael Williams, who placed second in the high jump (5’0”), and Ne’cori Brown, who finished fourth in the long jump (14’4.75”). The girls 4x100 relay team also earned a sixth-place finish. Across both teams, a number of athletes recorded personal bests, reflecting continued development as the season progresses. “All the athletes did a great job. They came out and represented Saginaw United professionally and had great sportsmanship,” said Coach Greene. While the team results may not yet reflect it, the Phoenix continue to build, with effort, improvement, and competitiveness trending in the right direction.
