Coach Earns League Coach of the Year Honor

Coach Earns League Coach of the Year Honor Peer recognition reflects a season of growth, resilience, and a winning culture built from within. The girls' basketball program has a new reason to celebrate. Head Coach Eugene Seals has been named SVL South Coach of the Year — an honor voted on by fellow coaches across the league and a recognition that speaks volumes about the culture being built in the program. "This honor is a testament of the work that has been put into this season," Coach Seals said. "Each player has improved and the opposing coaches have seen it." A Season of Resilience The road to success was not without its obstacles. The team struggled out of the gate, dropping several games by single-digit margins — losses that, while frustrating, carried a message of hope. "Losing multiple games by 10 or less, we knew we were really close to success — we just hadn't figured out how to get over the hump," the Coach Seals explained. "Once we were able to help the players understand what it takes to be successful, they were eager to taste that success. That switched the season around." The Coach Seals is known for his intensity on the sidelines but credits a foundation of trust with his players as the key to unlocking that turnaround. "I am a tough coach to play for because I am intense, but my players know that I care about them, so they trust me," he said. More Than a Game For this coach, the basketball court is a classroom. His philosophy centers on preparing young women not just for the next game, but for life beyond graduation. "I always tell the players this is not just about basketball," he said. "This is a safe place where they can learn how to navigate life. This is where they will learn the dedication and hard work that it will take to outpace their competition in the workforce or in job creation." He pointed to a compelling statistic: 75% of women who are CEOs were former athletes. It is a fact he keeps front of mind — and one he hopes his players carry with them long after their playing days are over. He also acknowledged the coaches who shaped his own philosophy, including Robinson, Gaddis, Thomas, and others who inspired his approach to the game and to mentorship. Eyes on Next Season With no seniors graduating and a full roster returning — plus a few new additions — expectations are high heading into next year. The Coach Seals is not shy about what this team is capable of. "This team could be a special team this year, if we are focused on the task and not distracted by outside influences," he said. "I always say, imagine if we started the season the same way we are ending it — where could we be? Now, we have next year to show just that." If this season is any indication, the answer to that question may be very exciting indeed.
