The Ritenour Huskies will look to continue their winning ways as they return to Moore Field for a matchup with the Mustangs of Marquette High School (1-1). The Huskies picked up their first win of the season last week with a convincing 35-0 defeat of the Jennings Warriors. The Huskies dominated both sides of the ball and were able to stifle a tough Jennings team. “Last week our guys knew they had to bounce back after our game against Kirkwood and they responded well,” said Head Coach Yarmon Kirksey. The Huskies’ defense suffocated the Warriors all night and the offense took advantage of their opportunities and put points on the board. “It was a great team win for us last week, which we needed, and now we look to do the same this week,” said Kirksey. The Huskies will have to contend with a Mustangs team that is also coming off their first win of the season, 24-7, against St. Dominic. “Marquette is a well-coached football team that has good players and they can beat us if we don’t come to play,” said offensive coordinator Dwayne Kirksey. The Huskies know that this game comes at a pivotal moment for them and a chance to prove just which team they are. After suffering a 66-22 defeat at the hands of the Kirkwood Pioneers and then a 35-0 dominant win of the Jennings Warriors, many are left wondering which version of the Huskies is the real version. “We’re not looking to prove anyone wrong; we’re just simply looking to prove ourselves right,” said senior safety Luster Matthews. After sitting out Week 1, Matthews returned to the field last week and led a stingy and hungry Huskies’ defense that gave up less than 150 total yards of offense. For the Huskies to be victorious, they will need another dominant performance from their defense, but also from their offense. The Huskies’ offense, led by senior quarterback Anthony Odom, found success on the ground and through the air. Odom, for the second week in a row, found the end zone with his legs. “Ant has deceptive speed and has made some really big plays for us when he gets outside of the pocket,” said D. Kirksey. The Huskies will again look to get the ball into the hands of their senior playmaker wideouts, Montrey Banks and Marcus Allen. Both players have shown to be explosive with the ball in their hands and are a threat to find the end zone anytime the ball is in their possession. The Huskies are poised to have a great game, but it will take a complete effort in all phases of the game to come out victorious. The Huskies boast an all-time 3-1 record against the Mustangs but know that this is a different season, a different team, and it will require them to come ready to play to find themselves on the winning side of the scoreboard at night’s end. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 pm and Moore Field policies and rules will be enforced. We hope to see you there. Go Huskies!!
