The Portland Raiders varsity tennis team got off to a good start in league play last night by picking up a win over Eaton Rapids, 5-3. The doubles lineup dominated for the Raiders. The No. 1 doubles pair of Sam Nobis and Cooper Thayer won their match 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 doubles. Gage Larson and Jacob Heinicke won their first set 6-0, then saw their opponent bow out with an injury retirement. Bentley Robertson and Liam Jacobi at No. 3 doubles battled through a tough first set, winning it 7-5. They then cruised to a 6-1 win in the next set to secure their win. Freshmen Dominic Fabiano and Grayson Graham won their match, 6-0, 6-0. No. 1 singles Ty Clark was mixing spin with power in his match, eventually earning a 6-4, 6-2 victory. No. 5 doubles of Chase Watson and Justice Xiu also had a nice showing with an 8-0 win in their pro-set. The Raiders will continue to practice hard and improve their skill set over the course of the season!
