Twelve Owosso High School sophomores were recently selected to represent the Trojans at the annual Flint Metro League Sophomore Leadership Summit, an event designed to recognize and develop the next generation of student-athlete leaders. Each year, the Flint Metro League brings together 12 sophomores from each of its member schools, totaling 144 student-athletes, for a day focused on leadership development, personal growth, and building connections with peers from across the conference. Students are nominated by their coaches based on their demonstrated leadership potential, both within their athletic programs and throughout their schools. Representing Owosso High School this year were: - Ava Spencer - Adyson Miculka - Avah Palatka - Emma Parker - Ella Parker - Lillian Salzwedel - Caleb Jurhs - Trevor Senk - Landon Harrand - Devin Arriaga - Leo Erfourth - Will Gobel The day began with breakfast and an interactive icebreaker activity that encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, meet athletes from other schools, and begin building relationships with fellow student leaders. Following the opening activities, students were divided into smaller groups for leadership sessions centered around the Nine Pillars of Great Leadership. Each Flint Metro League school brought a coach to lead a discussion on one of the pillars, providing students with valuable lessons and real-world examples of what it takes to become an effective leader. Representing Owosso was second-year Varsity Boys Wrestling Head Coach and Owosso High School School Resource Officer (SRO), Coach Mat Henry. Coach Henry led a session focused on Courage, sharing how courage plays an important role in his daily responsibilities as both a law enforcement officer and a coach. He challenged students to recognize that courage goes beyond competition, emphasizing the importance of standing up for what is right, making difficult decisions, and demonstrating leadership even when it may be uncomfortable. One of the most impactful moments of the day came during a special presentation from Coach Terry Hessbrook of Ithaca High School, who shared a powerful and emotional message about mental health and its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Through his work with the B4 Foundation, Coach Hessbrook travels throughout Michigan sharing his personal story and raising awareness about the importance of mental health. His presentation served as an important reminder that leadership is not only about performance and success, but also about compassion, supporting others, and recognizing when someone may be struggling. After lunch, students returned to their groups for a final leadership challenge. Each group was tasked with creating a public service announcement (PSA) highlighting the Nine Pillars of Great Leadership. Students worked collaboratively to develop their messages before taking the stage to perform their skits in front of all the students, coaches, and Athletic Directors from the 12 schools. The activity provided an opportunity for students to put their leadership lessons into action while demonstrating teamwork, creativity, communication, and the confidence to speak in front of their peers. The Flint Metro League Sophomore Leadership Summit continues to be a valuable experience for young student-athletes, providing them with tools and perspectives that extend far beyond athletics. For Owosso's 12 representatives, the experience was an opportunity to grow as individuals, connect with other student-athletes, and better understand the responsibility that comes with being a leader. Owosso High School is proud of these 12 Trojans for being recognized by their coaches as emerging leaders. Their selection reflects the positive impact they are already making within their programs and the potential they have to make an even greater difference in their school and community. The future of Trojan leadership is bright, and these student-athletes are helping lead the way!
