OWOSSO — The Owosso varsity volleyball team gave its home crowd plenty to cheer about Monday night, battling through five sets to earn an exciting victory over Brandon, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-7. In a match that saw momentum swing back and forth throughout the night, the Trojans continued to show the fight and resilience that have become a defining part of their season. Owosso grabbed a hard-fought opening set, 25-23, before Brandon responded with a 25-18 win in the second. The Trojans regained control in the third, 25-21, but Brandon once again answered in the fourth to force a deciding fifth set. With the match on the line, Owosso delivered its best finish of the night. The Trojans came out aggressive and composed in the fifth, quickly taking control and never allowing Brandon to find the momentum it had used to answer Owosso throughout the first four sets. Owosso closed out the match emphatically, 15-7, to secure the five-set victory. Junior Breeah Reed turned in a dominant all-around performance, leading the Trojans with 20 kills, 18 digs and nine aces. Reed's ability to impact the match offensively, defensively and from the service line helped set the tone for Owosso throughout all five sets. The Trojans also received a balanced offensive effort behind her. Senior Ady Freeman finished with 12 kills and 14 digs, while freshman Aspyn Brock added 12 kills, giving Owosso three attackers in double figures. Setters Kristie Caswell and Ainsley Lintner helped distribute the offense, finishing with 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Lintner also added four aces. Defensively, Owosso continued to show its growth. Nevaeh LeConte recorded 20 digs, while freshman Ryder Elwell added 13 and Lillianna Schack finished with nine digs and four aces. As important as the individual performances were, the victory was another example of a young Owosso team learning how to respond when challenged. Twice Brandon answered an Owosso set victory to even the match, and twice the Trojans had to reset. When there was no next set left to rely on, Owosso responded with its most convincing set of the night. The win continues an encouraging stretch for the Trojans as they build confidence, chemistry and toughness heading into the final portion of the season. For Owosso, Monday's victory wasn't simply about winning in five — it was about showing that when a match gets difficult, this group is increasingly comfortable fighting its way through it.
