OWOSSO — The Owosso varsity volleyball team showed flashes of the team it continues to work toward becoming Wednesday night, battling Goodrich in a four-set conference matchup before falling 12-25, 25-21, 14-25, 15-25. After a difficult opening set, the Trojans responded with grit in the second. Owosso settled into its offense, competed with more confidence and put the pieces together to earn a 25-21 victory and even the match at one set apiece. Goodrich regained control over the final two sets, however, as Owosso struggled to find consistency in the back court. Serve receive and defensive execution made it difficult for the Trojans to stay in system and establish their offense consistently. Despite the loss, Owosso continued to show bright spots individually and as a team. Freshman Aspyn Brock led the Trojan attack with 9 kills on 34 attempts while adding a solo block. Junior Breeah Reed contributed 6 kills, 11 digs, two aces and a block, continuing to impact multiple areas of the game. Senior Ady Freeman added 4 kills, 11 digs, seven assists, an ace and a block, while Nevaeh LeConte anchored the defense with a team-high 18 digs. Setter Ainsley Lintner finished with 11 assists and two aces. As a team, Owosso recorded 24 kills, 55 digs, nine aces and three blocks. While the Trojans weren't able to sustain the level of play they showed in the second set, that performance offered another glimpse of what the group is capable of when its passing, defense and offense come together. Owosso will look to build on those moments as the Trojans continue through the second half of the season, with an emphasis on improving back-court consistency and turning stretches of strong volleyball into complete matches.
