NOUVEL WINS TRAVERSE CITY TOURNAMENT: It took late-game heroics and overtime, but the Nouvel Catholic Central boys varsity basketball team topped Traverse City St. Francis 53-50 to wrest the weekend invitational tournament championship from the host team. The squads were knotted at 21 at the half and the score stayed tight through the remainder of the game. But with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, senior RJ Kelley (pictured) scored on a drive to send the contest into overtime. The Panthers outscored Traverse City 8-5 in the final frame to take the crown and move to 10-6 on the season. Freshman Kobe Box led the Panthers with 24 points and five steals. Kelley followed up on Friday’s 29-point performance with 16 on Saturday. Courtney Burch sunk nine points and reached the double-digit rebound mark for second game in a row with 11. Nouvel opens February at home Tuesday against Flint Powers Catholic (11–3). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Let’s Go Panthers!
