Varsity vs Normal Community High School (2 - 1) Win MS picked up their 8th win in a row and their best of the year. Both coaches wanted to wait out the rain as it had the promise of a postseason level game.. The Lady Iron came out firing, controlling the ball and dominating the first 15 minutes of play. The stout Bulldog backline kept them from getting too many dangerous opportunities in the run of play, but Lainey Jacobs had a heck of a night shot blocking for the Bulldogs. Martin and Welge did a good job organizing the backline and keeping the Iron from breaking through. With about a minute to go in the first half, the Bulldogs got caught stepping without cover and the Iron were able to finally break through and take the lead. In the second half, the Bulldogs played their best soccer of the year, moving the ball around and finding isolations. Ella Walk was able to exploit it. She scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the half. The first was from range: over the keeper, against the bar and down just over the goal line. For the next, Hadley Grotelueschen played Ella in behind the backline. Walk's work in the weightroom shown. The Iron keeper came out, and tried to shoulder Ella, but didn't wrap up the ball. Ella absorbed the hit and delivered her own., Walk tapped the ball around the keeper and dribbled it into the goal to give the Bulldogs the lead. The Bulldogs shifted to a defensive formation for the final 20 minutes. The defense bent but didn't break. Jacobs absorbed a lot of shots from range that she was able to hold on. With under a minute to go, she got called for delaying the game. It led to one of the most exciting finishes I've been a part of. The Bulldogs had to sub in a fresh keeper for her first varsity minutes. Claire Waggoner has ice in her veins, it was a thing of beauty tonight. She didn't bat an eye on the call up, facing an indirect kick in the box with 45 seconds to go in the game. The Iron took the kick 15 yards out, and the Bulldogs were able to deflect it, and then defend the following corner kick to win the game. Stats: Ella Walk 2 goals Hadley Grotelueschen 1 assist Lainey Jacobs 12 saves, 1 goal against
