I.H.S.A. Girls Track and Field State Qualifiers

Good afternoon to you all. So much excitement for the Girls' Track and Field Team over the last two days. Of the 66 teams that scored in the State Finals, Mahomet-Seymour finished 8th overall. While only the top three teams earn a trophy, finishing in the top 10 is a huge accomplishment. The top three teams were Troy (Triad), Danville, and Chicago South Shore International College Prep. Some of the most fun occurred when the meet was over. Celebrating with a team bus ride home and being greeted by so many community members is something that our team will always remember. The timing worked out perfectly, as the junior high 8th-grade girls' team rolled in with a state trophy! It was a good weekend for Mahomet-Seymour Girls' Track and Field. Read below for more details, or check out https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/meet/663323/teamscores. Madalyn pulled off quite the tough combination of races. From the beginning of the season, she had her sights set on a difficult trio of events, all occurring in the final third of the meet. Her level of performance typically requires time to reset before asking her body to do it again. We knew that doing this on back-to-back days was going to be a lot, but she was not afraid of the challenge. Because of that bravery, she earned three state medals. Three medals in three events is a great weekend. Anniston Huff – 800m Run Ranked 19th going into the meet, Anniston finished 9th thanks to her personal record of 2:19 in prelims, which earned her the opportunity to race for a medal in finals. She then recorded another PR of 2:17 in the finals. She had to beat three girls in the finals to earn her medal. Selma Tilton – 300m Hurdles Ranked 10th going into the state meet and finished 9th. Madalyn Marx – 200m Dash Ranked 4th going into the meet and finished 3rd. Cecily Smith – Pole Vault Ranked 17th going into the meet and finished 13th. Finley Smith – Pole Vault Ranked 28th going into the meet and finished 21st. Hannah Martin – Triple Jump Ranked 13th going into the meet and finished 21st. She just couldn’t find her jumping legs today after a season of huge growth. 4x800 Relay – Taylor Mills, Ava Cvengros, Paige Jansen, and Anniston Huff Ranked 16th going into the meet and finished 17th. This group has so much potential going into next season. 2 juniors and 2 freshmen- a perfect combination for future success. 4x400 Relay – Evie Hillard, Selma Tilton, Anniston Huff, and Madalyn Marx Ranked 1st going into the meet and placed 2nd with a season PR. Chicago Simeon was ranked 39th going into the meet and placed 1st. Our girls ran their strongest race of the season, and we knew it was going to be an intense race based on prelim times. I haven’t reviewed all the details yet, but I would guess there wasn’t another top 4x400 relay with three runners competing in multiple events. For Mady, she had a very short turnaround and didn’t even get to receive her 200m medal because she was headed to the check-in tent with her 4x400 team. She still helped us nearly pull off the upset. The finish line just came a few seconds too early — her homestretch kick was a good one. Emily Anand – 3200m Run Ranked 19th going into the meet and finished 18th. Paige Jansen – 3200m Run Ranked 21st going into the meet and finished 21st. She’s only a freshman!! Alternates for the trip included Cecily Smith, Paige Jansen, and Cora Ummel for the 4x400, along with Kennedy Ashby, Kaitlyn Waisath, and Cecily Smith for the 4x800. These athletes were prepared if we needed them, but they also brought so much energy and support for their teammates. The coaches are excited to see where this team can go, as we are already thinking about next season! Thanks for following our journey this season. Appreciate everyone who supported us this season. As always, sorry for any typos. It was a pretty exhausting weekend. Lisa Martin (On behalf of Laurel Pauza, Rachel Kyle, Cara O'Neill, and Bryan Clark)
