The Monroe Central football team earned its first win of the season, defeating Union City 43-22 in the Golden Bears’ 2023 home opener. The game was tight through the first quarter, with Monroe Central (1-1) heading into the second period with a 15-8 lead. But the Golden Bears dominated the rest of the first half, outscoring the Indians (0-2) 15-0 in the second quarter to take a commanding 30-8 lead going into halftime. Monroe Central had a solid performance defensively, forcing six Union City turnovers. Those plays included three takeaways via interceptions — plays by Carter Duncan, Justus Ullom and Peyton Farmer — and another two fumble recoveries by Brylen Case and Logan Horne. Jerimiah Ullom had six tackles (three for a loss) with a sack, while Ethan Hunt led the team with seven tackles and added a forced fumble. Quarterback Lane Wilson had an efficient outing for the Golden Bears, completing 8-of-11 pass attempts for 99 yards and a touchdown — a play to Jerimiah Ullom, who fumbled after 17 yards but recovered the football himself and ran 41 yards to the end zone from there. Jerimiah Ullom and Dion Sloss added two rushing scores on the day, while Wilson had a keeper for another rushing score. Monroe Central travels to take on North Decatur next Friday night to open up Mid-Eastern Conference play.
