The Monroe Central football team opened up its 2023 season Friday night with a 42-13 road loss to Winchester. The Golden Bears (0-1) were unable to withstand three Golden Falcons (1-0) touchdown drives to begin the first and second halves, respectively. Monroe Central did cut the Winchester lead down to 21-6 at halftime thanks to a 10-yard touchdown pass from Lane Wilson to Carter Duncan with 10 seconds left in the second quarter, but the Golden Falcons pulled away from there and didn’t slow down the entire second half. Wilson completed 6-of-12 passes for 103 yards with one touchdown and one interception each. He also led the team with 27 rushing yards. Justus Ullom had a team-best 43 yards receiving on the night, while Jerimiah Ullom added a 7-yard rushing touchdown late in the fourth quarter for the Golden Bears. Elijah Goodspeed and Griffin Gannom each had a team-best seven tackles for the Monroe Central defense. Izaiah Mangas, Pierceton Erwin and Logan Horne each had tackle for loss. Monroe Central opens up its 2023 home slate next week when it plays host to Union City. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
