The Varsity Lions traveled to WRV this week and came back home with the Greene County Invitational Championship. The Lions claimed the championship with a 54-42 victory over the host Wolverines. The Lions shot out to a 7-0 lead early in the contest, but the hosts closed the gap to 12-11 by the end of the first quarter. The Lions led 27-20 at halftime. They grew the lead to as many as twelve in the 3rd quarter, but the Wolverines would not go away and the lead was 38-29 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter went back and forth and the lead didn't grow much, greatly impart to cold shooting from the line for the Lions who went 11-20 from the charity stripe. "Give Levi (Hostetter) and his team a lot of credit. They played very hard and they never went away. They have a couple of very talented kids and were just tough and gritty on both ends all night long," said Coach Thompson. "It was a good week for our kids. It's great to play in a tournament in the middle of the season that simulates Sectional week from a preparation standpoint. We played Tuesday (win over Pleasantview); Friday (win over Shakamak); and then tonight (Saturday over WRV).," said Thompson. "It's crazy that now we've finished the first two-thirds of our season. I like where our team is at and we still have a ton of room for growth. This last third of our season is really going to challenge our kids and get them ready for the tournament," he continued. Senior, AJ Foster was named the Roger Weaver Most Outstanding Player for the tournament and Junior, Will Lyon was named to the all-tournament team. The Lions will be back in action on Friday night when they host Barr-Reeve in a big Blue-Chip Conference showdown at Jack Butcher Arena. It will also be the annual Coaches vs. Cancer night for the schools.
