Lady Lions Take Care of Business Against Clay City, Improve to 8–4

On Saturday afternoon, the Loogootee Lady Lions hosted the Clay City Lady Eels at Jack Butcher Arena. The afternoon began with two quarters of JV action. Despite trailing 7–2 after the first quarter, Karmen Wilson took over offensively, scoring 10 points to help the Lady Lions rally to a 14–14 tie. MKenna Gregory added 4 points in the JV contest. The varsity game opened with a strong start for Loogootee. Ava Jeffers attacked the rim for a basket and free throw, while Alexis Heckard dished out assists to Alaina Diamond and Lydia Hawkins, giving the Lady Lions an early 7–2 advantage. Diamond followed with a strong take to the basket, Sophia Toy knocked down a three, and a Diamond free throw pushed the lead to 13–4 at the end of the first quarter. Loogootee continued to build momentum in the second. A six-point burst from Diamond was followed by a Hawkins three and another Hawkins drive to the rim, extending the lead to 24–7. Another Toy triple capped the half, sending the Lady Lions into the break with a commanding 27–9 advantage. The Lady Lions turned up the tempo in the third quarter. Hawkins went coast-to-coast for a layup, Jeffers pushed the ball ahead to Hawkins who found Diamond for a score, and Diamond added a putback to make it 33–9. A Heckard free throw and a Heckard three extended the margin to 37–9, the largest lead of the night, before the quarter ended at 37–14. In the fourth, Hawkins found Jeffers underneath for a quick bucket, and Diamond followed with a mid-range jumper to make it 41–14. Diamond later scored again off a Heckard assist, Toy found Wilson for a mid-range shot, and Wilson added another basket as Loogootee closed out a 47–28 victory. The win improves the Lady Lions to 8–4 on the season. Loogootee returns to action Monday at Bloomfield before hosting the Graves Construction Greene County Invitational on Thursday and Saturday.
