Lady Lions Travel to Southridge, Split Monday Night Doubleheader Last night, the Junior High Lady Lions opened a three-game road stand with a trip to Southridge. The 7th grade secured a strong win to begin the night, while the 8th grade battled back from multiple deficits before falling in overtime. 7th Grade: Loogootee 31, Southridge 22 The 7th grade Lady Lions opened the night with a smooth bucket from Abby Meyer, and after Southridge answered, Ayla Hawkins attacked the rim to put Loogootee up 4–2. A Kori Arvin steal helped set up another Hawkins score for a 6–4 lead, and the Lady Lions ended the first quarter ahead 7–6. Southridge briefly took the lead at the start of the second, but a Hawkins free throw tied the game at 8, and another gave Loogootee the lead back. A Hawkins steal and putback pushed the margin to 11–8, and Emma Downey snapped a cold streak with a much-needed bucket. A dish from Arvin to Remington Bell followed, extending the lead to 15–8. Some late turnovers allowed Southridge to close the gap, but Loogootee still held a 15–12 halftime advantage. The Raiders again scored quickly out of the break, taking a 16–15 lead. Hawkins responded with a free throw and a tough finish through contact to reclaim the lead. From there, the Lady Lions never trailed again. Meyer added another score, Arvin found Downey in transition, and additional assists from Arvin to Hawkins created separation as Loogootee closed out a 31–22 road victory. The Lady Lions improve to 6–3 and will travel to Forest Park on Thursday. Ayla Hawkins: 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, Emma Downey: 6 points, 7 rebounds, Abby Meyer: 6 points, 4 rebounds, Remington Bell: 2 points, Alyn Strange: 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, Elin Wade: 3 steals, Kori Arvin: 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, Lyric Graber: 1 rebound, 1 steal 8th Grade: Southridge 40, Loogootee 38 (OT) The 8th grade Lady Lions looked to attack the Southridge 2–3 zone once again after last year’s thrilling finish, but they found themselves in an early hole, trailing 10–2 after a turnover-filled first quarter. Loogootee fought back. An and-1 from Taryn Brown off a feed from Fara Fisher, followed by a basket from Sydnee Salmon, cut the deficit to 10–7. A Brown free throw made it 10–8 before Southridge responded with a 5–0 run. A bucket at the horn sent the Lady Lions into halftime down 17–10. Southridge struck first in the second half, but Brylee Bateman answered. After the Raiders extended the lead at the foul line, the teams traded baskets until Addison Moore drilled a three to make it 23–17. Southridge scored again, but Moore caught fire, hitting back-to-back threes to close the quarter and pull Loogootee within two, 25–23. Fisher opened the fourth with a transition finish off a Moore assist to tie the game. Southridge immediately responded with an and-1 to regain the lead. A Fisher steal set up a Bateman bucket, but a Raider three kept Loogootee trailing by four. Salmon scored on a pick-and-roll from Moore, then scored again on the break to cut it to one. A Moore-to-Fisher fast break finally gave the Lady Lions their first lead of the night at 33–32. Southridge earned yet another and-1 to regain the lead, but Salmon tied the game at 34–34 with a free throw. Out of a timeout, Coach Toy drew up a play that resulted in a Salmon finish off a Moore assist with 20 seconds left, making it 36–34. Southridge scored in the final seconds and drew contact for another and-1 chance; the missed free throw forced overtime. In extra time, Taryn Brown split a pair at the line to put Loogootee ahead 37–36, but Southridge answered with their seventh and-1 opportunity of the night to reclaim a 39–37 lead. Kensleigh Carrico went 1/2 at the stripe to bring the Lady Lions within one, but the Raiders added late free throws to secure a 40–38 overtime win, handing Loogootee its first loss of the season.
