Lady Lions Fall Short Against North Daviess in 30–29 Finish, Move to 4–1 On Tuesday night, the Loogootee Varsity Lady Lions opened a boys/girls doubleheader inside a packed Jack Butcher Arena, tipping off at 6:00 p.m. against the North Daviess Lady Cougars. Entering the night 4–0, Loogootee was aiming to secure its first 5–0 start since 2020, but the evening instead brought their first setback of the season in a tight 30–29 finish. North Daviess struck first off the opening tip, but Loogootee answered quickly with a smooth back-cut score from freshman Lydia Hawkins assisted by junior Alaina Diamond. The Cougars responded with two more buckets, and free throws on both ends kept the low-scoring first quarter at 3–8 in favor of North Daviess. A pair of free throws from Alexis Heckard pulled Loogootee within 5–8, but several inside baskets from the Cougars stretched the deficit to 5–14. A Hawkins kick-out to Sophia Toy for a three, only the second and final field goal of the half—kept the Lady Lions within reach, yet Loogootee entered the break trailing 8–18. Out of halftime, Loogootee surged. A Diamond free throw followed by back-to-back buckets from Ava Jeffers cut the margin to five. North Daviess answered with a three, but Hawkins attacked for two straight layups to bring the score back to 17–21. After traded baskets and free throws, the Lady Lions trailed just 21–24. A tough Hawkins finish in traffic brought the gap to one, before another timely North Daviess three made it 23–27. Loogootee punched back, Hawkins floated in another score, and a pair of Diamond free throws finally tied the game at 27. North Daviess regained the lead on a layup with three minutes remaining, but Hawkins once again delivered, finishing off a dish from Toy to make it 29–29. With time fading, Heckard committed a foul sending the Cougars to the line, where they split the pair to go up 29–30. Loogootee received possession sideline-out with four seconds left following an errant pass from Jeffers. Heckard’s three-point attempt narrowly missed, and her put-back attempt on the offensive rebound rolled off the rim, sealing the one-point loss and ending the Lady Lions’ undefeated start. Freshman Lydia Hawkins led Loogootee with 12 points on an efficient 6-for-9 shooting performance. Alaina Diamond added 6 points, all from the free-throw line, along with 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Ava Jeffers contributed 6 points and matched Diamond with 9 rebounds. Sophia Toy finished with 3, and Alexis Heckard scored 2 points from the stripe. The Lady Lions return home next Tuesday for a major test as they welcome the #4-ranked Orleans Lady Bulldogs to Jack Butcher Arena.
