It was a bittersweet moment as the old director of the band left Lenoir City High School. After last school year Mr. Zachary Slimp happened to switch to White House High School. However, his seat was not left empty for long thanks to the new director of bands, Dr. Andrew Hardy-Moore. For five years he spent his hard working hours on obtaining his doctorate and was looking for a job that had a strong support for the arts and a pre-established band. Luckily, Lenoir City High School was the place for him. “I was hesitant at first since we had Slimp for so long, but I think the more we get to know him the more that he's growing on the rest of us.” Travis Wetzel (12) said. The students miss Mr. Slimp, but they are getting used to such a drastic change. It is an intense shift for everyone but that doesn't mean it is a bad thing. Meanwhile, Dr. Hardy-Moore works hard on earning the kid’s trust and upholding the school’s standard for a good band director. He has lots of respect for the band and wants to uphold its reputation. “I hope to continue the program and the excellent standard this school already has,” Hardy-Moore said. He is extremely friendly and goes above and beyond. He likes to get to know the students as people. He spent a long time with the band, getting to know each individual. He loved spending time with the students and seeing their work ethic. The key for good unison and connection for a band is the close bond behind the scenes. Building relationships and observing the ways each individual thrives is one of Hardy-Moore's favorite parts of this job. “I like the students. They are go-getters and rise to the occasion time and time again,” Hardy-Moore said. He is quite enthusiastic about the band and he can't wait to make more memories with these tiny musicians. He reflects on funny moments from the time he has spent with the students. Already, he has created sweet memories to tell proudly about his connection with the students. Hardy-Moore gets to encourage these young high schoolers and help alongside them to further their musical talents. “We took the band to play for some teachers. It was really cool and endearing to see those kids meet with their old elementary school teachers and for the teachers to see how much their kids have grown up,” Hardy-Moore said. While many students are still hesitant about this change, some are welcoming him with open arms. Dr. Hardy-Moore has many big plans, not just with the band, but getting to know everyone and the community. All of the staff and students wish him good luck and that he continues to feel welcomed as the new director of bands. While this may be the end for some, this is just the very beginning for Dr. Hardy-Moore. By: Ellie Smith
