Freshman vs Portage High School The La Porte Slicers opened their season in impressive fashion against the Portage Indians, putting together a complete team effort on offense, defense, and special teams to start the year 1-0. The action started immediately with #28 Austin Agular sending the opening kickoff into the end zone for a touchback. Just 53 seconds into the contest, the Slicer defense made its presence known. #2 Drake Lidgard and #57 Mason Cole combined to sack the Portage quarterback in the end zone for a safety, giving La Porte an early 2-0 lead. The Slicers quickly added to it. With 6:30 remaining in the first quarter, #40 Adrian Diaz found the end zone for La Porte's first touchdown of the season. Agular converted the PAT, extending the lead to 9-0. La Porte continued to control the game in the second quarter. With 6:58 remaining, #23 Kason Sheblosky found the end zone on the ground to push the Slicer advantage to 15-0. With 2:39 left before halftime, #21 Logan Wiesemann added another rushing touchdown, making it 21-0. The Slicers weren't finished. Just before halftime, #23 Logan Wiesemann connected with #14 Nick Dubs in the back of the end zone for another La Porte touchdown, sending the Slicers into the break with a commanding 27-0 lead. Wiesemann used his legs again in the third quarter, finding the end zone for another rushing touchdown and extending the advantage to 34-0. In the fourth quarter, #42 Hank Travis joined the scoring attack, powering his way into the end zone on the ground. #28 Austin Agular added the PAT. The Slicer defense then helped put the finishing touches on the season-opening victory when #36 Anthony Crittendon came away with an interception to get the football back for La Porte and help close out the game. While the touchdowns will show up on the scoreboard, the performance was about much more than who crossed the goal line. The offensive line played like they had a camera on their backs all night. They battled on every snap and fought to create every opening, giving the Slicer offense opportunities to make plays on the ground and through the air. Defensively, La Porte played as one unit and fired on all cylinders. The defensive line created disruption up front, the linebackers played with aggression, and the defensive backs showed the vision and discipline needed to finish the job on the back end. From the opening kickoff to the final defensive stand, it was a complete team effort. Your La Porte Slicers are 1-0 on the season. Next week, the Slicers hit the road and travel to Lowell to take on the Red Devils. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Central. Go Slicers!
