Shayla Sorg drove in six runs on two hits to lead La Porte Varsity Softball past Merrillville 19-7 on Wednesday. Sorg hit a grand slam to left field in the second scoring four, singled in the first scoring one, and walked in the fifth scoring one. La Porte won thanks in part to 13 runs in the second inning. Lexi Surowiec was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Sorg hit a grand slam to left field, a dropped third strike scored one run, Allie Wiencek doubled, scoring one run, Keraghan Blind singled, scoring one run, Evie Travis hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, Surowiec drew a walk, scoring one run, Madi Squire doubled, scoring two runs, and Paige White singled, scoring one run. Blind started in the circle for La Porte. The starter gave up three hits and four runs (two earned) over two innings, striking out five and walking one. Mia Johnson pitched three innings in relief for La Porte. The hurler surrendered four hits and three runs (two earned) while, striking out one and walking four. La Porte amassed 16 hits in the game. Johnson, La Porte's number eight hitter, led the team with three hits in three at-bats. Travis, Squire, Blind, and Wiencek each collected multiple hits for La Porte Varsity Slicers. Surowiec led La Porte Varsity Slicers with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, collecting six walks for the game. La Porte will travel to Wheeler for their next game on Thursday.
