Cruz Orueta Medals and Finishes 6th at State

Freshman Cruz Orueta (DAC Champ, Sectional Champ, Regional Champ, and Semi-State Runner-Up) was paired against the number 1 ranked wrestler in Indiana at 106 pounds for the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals. Julianna Ocampo of New Haven entered the opening round match at a record of 47-1; Cruz Orueta entered entered at 40-4. Orueta earned an opening round take down to go ahead 3-0. The second round remained scoreless. Then, Orueta went to work on Ocampo with a quick escape to start the third and a second take down putting him up 7-0. Ocampo earned a late escape for her only score of the match. Orueta starts the finals with a 7-1 win and advances to the final eight in the quarterfinals tomorrow. He will square off against Traevon Ducking of Brownsburg who is 34-5 overall. Continued... Orueta faced off against the eventual State Champion Ducking of Brownsburg Saturday morning. Cruz competed well but lost by fall in the 3rd period. In the consolations, Orueta faced off against 42-5 Joey Warner of Fort Wayne Carroll and was victorious 6-2 to advance to the 5th/6th place consolation. In the final match of the state finals for Orueta, he squared off against Reed Wicker of Delta. He was defeated 11-4 and finished 6th overall. Orueta had a memorable and magnificent season as a freshman, leaving the LC community excited for what's still to come.
