Frosh Cruz Orueta State Bound

Lake Central took 6 individual wrestlers to the IHSAA Semi-State at East Chicago Central High School on Saturday. Freshman Cruz Orueta stole the show. Orueta won his first three matches by fall advancing to face Sam Westfall of Crown Point in the finals. Orueta recently defeated Westfall at DACs but this match Westfall won 7-3. Oruea earned a trip to the State Finals where he will first wrestle senior Julianna Ocampo of New Haven. Ocampo enters the finals ranked number 1 in the state; she is 47-1 overall. Orueta is the number 11 ranked wrestler, and he enters the finals with an impressive record of 40-4 (3 losses of the 4 coming to Westfall). Orueta will wrestle on Friday, 2/21 at 2 PM CST at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a chance to reach the medal rounds. In other weight classes on Saturday, Gabriel Ruano lost by technical fall at 113 pounds. Luke Neid lost a hard-fought match late by a score of 5-2 at 120 pounds. Senior Tino Garcia was pinned in his first match at 165 pounds. Senior Brendan Peterson lost a highly contested match 10-6 at 190 pounds; and senior Emilio Tirado's historic Lake Central career came to an end with a 10-8 ticket round defeat at 175 pounds.
