Jeffersonville Wrestling Celebrates Senior Night, Legacy, and a Dominant Win

Senior night is always special at Jeffersonville High School, and Thursday night inside the JHS wrestling room was no exception. Under the spotlight, the Red Devils honored six seniors, recognized a legendary supporter of the program, showcased the next generation of wrestlers, and capped the evening with an 84-0 victory over Providence. “This senior class—like every senior class—is a favorite of mine, just for different reasons,” said Jeffersonville head coach Danny Struck. “Each group leaves its own mark on our program, and this one is no different.” The six seniors recognized included Gavin Grisham, a past regional qualifier; Quintin Smith, a sectional champion; Ari Santos, an Academic All-State honoree; James Dyer, a regional qualifier; Abril Andres, a girls regional qualifier and Academic All-State selection; and Kaylen Cooke, the team’s manager. Senior night carried extra meaning for Struck, as it marked a milestone in his coaching career—coaching a second generation of Jeffersonville families. “My first year coaching at Jeff, Kevin Cooke was a junior,” Struck said. “Now I’m graduating his daughter as our manager, and his son is currently a sophomore on the team. That’s my first father-and-son combo I’ve coached at the high school level.” Another senior, James Dyer, represents that same generational connection. “I had Jacie Dyer as a student in my world history class years ago, and now her son is graduating,” Struck said. “That officially tells me I’ve been doing this a long time. But more importantly, it’s incredibly special that former students trust me—and Jeffersonville High School—with their kids. That may be the biggest honor I’ll ever receive.” Struck noted that there are now four current wrestlers whose parents he either coached or taught in class. “Thanks to Jake ‘Spud’ Gibson,” he added with a smile. Before varsity action began, the future of Red Devil wrestling took center stage as 20 Jeffersonville elementary wrestlers competed in a “friendly” match against Providence. “That’s what nights like this are about—past, present, and future all in the same room,” Struck said. “Once a Red Devil, always a Red Devil.” The evening also included a special recognition of Scott Slaughter, the 1978 sectional champion and longtime supporter of Jeffersonville wrestling. Slaughter, the grandfather of senior Quintin Smith, was honored for 50 years of service to the program and the Jeff wrestling community. Together, Slaughter and Smith represent the program’s first-ever grandfather–grandson sectional champion duo. On the mat, Jeffersonville delivered a dominant performance, sweeping all 14 bouts for an 84-0 win. Sophomores Timothy Wilkins and Dylan Grismer stood out with confident performances, both earning falls. “Tim and Dylan showed great confidence in their matches tonight,” Struck said. “That’s growth you love to see, especially on a night with this much emotion.” Senior Quintin Smith and James Dyer both picked up wins, while Gavin Grisham closed the dual in heavyweight fashion. The Red Devils also received strong efforts throughout the lineup, with multiple pins and forfeits sealing the lopsided final score. For Struck, the wins mattered—but the meaning of the night mattered more. “This was about honoring families, honoring tradition, and celebrating what makes Jeffersonville wrestling special,” he said. “To those families—thank you for trusting JHS with your kids. You know what a great place this is.” And under the lights, surrounded by generations of Red Devils, the message was clear: the legacy continues.
