The Jeffersonville girls wrestling team continued its strong early-season momentum with a second-place finish at the Derby City Classic, a 26-team tournament featuring programs from across the region. Lafayette (Lexington, KY) claimed the team title, Jeffersonville finished a close second, and Central rounded out the top three. Jeffersonville was led by a pair of champions, as Fatima Carillo (120 lbs) and Yarely Solis (184 lbs) each went 3–0 to capture individual titles. Both wrestlers controlled their brackets and provided crucial points in the team race. The Red Devils added more hardware with strong podium finishes from Justise Clubb (114 lbs), who went 3–1 to take third, Abril Andres (138 lbs), who finished third, and A’lia Griffith (152 lbs), who also placed third with a 2–1 record. Scarlett McRae (145 lbs) battled through a tough bracket to earn a fourth-place finish. Valuable experience was also gained by Queen Munezero (120 lbs) and Valeria Ramirez (126 lbs), who both competed hard against deep fields. Girls head coach Joe Somerville was proud of the team’s effort and resilience throughout the day. “This group just keeps finding ways to compete,” Somerville said. “We had kids step up in big moments, fight back after tough losses, and support each other all day. That’s what championship culture looks like.” Head coach Danny Struck echoed that praise, emphasizing both the present success and future growth of the program. “To finish second in a 26-team field says a lot about the consistency of this group,” Struck said. “They wrestle with confidence, they believe in each other, and they’re continuing to raise the standard for girls wrestling at Jeffersonville.” The strong showing comes just one week after Jeffersonville captured the HHC Conference Championship, and the Red Devils won’t have to wait long for their next challenge. Next weekend, Jeffersonville will host the Jeff Classic at Jeffersonville High School, looking to carry momentum in front of a home crowd.
