The Jeffersonville Varsity B wrestling team turned heads at the Derby City Classic, finishing 2nd out of 21 teams in a deep varsity field. Jeffersonville totaled 120 team points, narrowly trailing champion Spencer County, Kentucky (131 points), while Bardstown, Kentucky—led by former JHS standout Richard Hayes—claimed third with 116 points. Competing in a true varsity tournament, Jeffersonville brought a young Varsity B squad and showed they belong on the big stage. Despite facing seasoned varsity lineups, the Red Devils battled from start to finish and proved their depth and future potential. Leading the way were two sophomore champions. Chandler Cooke (215 lbs) dominated the heavyweight division, going 3–0 to claim the title, while Cooper Spaulding (175 lbs) put together an impressive 4–0 run to earn his championship. Their performances anchored a strong overall team effort. Several Red Devils reached the finals, including Angel Zayas (165 lbs), who finished runner-up at 3–1, and Bryce Treat (157 lbs), who also placed second with a 2–1 record. Jeffersonville added valuable points with third-place finishes from Gio Celis (215 lbs, 3–1) and Onyx Pagan (120 lbs, 3–1). Additional placers included Ari Santos (150 lbs, 4th, 2–2), Jesus Ruiz (190 lbs, 4th, 3–1), and Andres Juarez (132 lbs, 4th, 2–1). Logan Vidt (120 lbs) also contributed by picking up a match win in a tough bracket. Varsity B coach Nick Stewart praised the team’s effort and growth. “These guys competed with confidence and didn’t back down from anyone,” Stewart said. “Chandler and Cooper showed great leadership, Angel and Bryce battled through tough finals, and our younger kids kept improving every match. This group is learning how to win at the varsity level.” Head coach Danny Struck echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the long-term impact of the performance. “I’m extremely excited about this up-and-coming varsity group,” Struck said. “To take second place at a tournament like this with such a young lineup says a lot about where our program is headed.” The Jeffersonville Varsity B team will be back in action next weekend at the Rumble in the Hive, carrying momentum and confidence from a standout showing at the Derby City Classic.
