The Jeffersonville Girls Wrestling team hit the road Saturday for the Mooresville Girls Invitational, a long day filled with tough matchups, big momentum swings, and a gritty late surge from the Red Devils. Jeff opened the morning with a difficult slate, dropping championship round duals to Hamilton Southeastern (49–29), Greenwood (54–30), and Columbus East (42–36) despite several individual bright spots. But instead of folding, the Red Devils answered with fire. In the placement rounds, Jeffersonville stormed back to defeat Riverton Parke 42–30, then shut out Southport 54–0 to close the day on a high note. “What I loved most was that they never quit,” said Head Coach Joe Somerville. “We wrestled some very strong teams early, and instead of hanging their heads, the girls fought back and showed what Red Devil toughness looks like.” Jeffersonville picked up a wave of wins throughout the day, highlighted by multiple athletes going undefeated or stacking up dominant performances. Outstanding Performers Abril Andes (135) – The senior leader went 3–0, including a pin over RIPA and a forfeit win against Columbus East. “Abril wrestled like a captain today,” Somerville said. “She carried herself with poise and got us big momentum in every dual.” Kristin Brown (100) – Brown had a huge day, going 3–1 with pins and multiple forfeit wins while scoring vital team points. “Kristin is really turning a corner—her pace and confidence grow every week,” Somerville added. Yarely Solis (190) – Solis finished 3–0 with two forfeits and a lightning-fast :23 pin against Columbus East. “Yarely was fantastic. She’s improving daily, and her energy lifts the whole lineup,” said Somerville. Tarajee Diaz (140) – Diaz secured two wins by forfeit and another in the Southport dual, helping lock down the late sweep. Somerville noted, “Tarajee is steady, reliable, and always ready. That consistency matters.” Fatima Carrillo (120) and Justise Clubb-Leon (115) also stepped up big, each earning key forfeit wins to push Jeff over Riverton Parke. The day also saw strong efforts from Alia Griffith, Daytona Tripp, Abi Lemon, Levi Evans, Queen Munezero, and Isabella Stewart, who all battled through tough brackets and contributed points. Despite some close matches that slipped away, Coach Somerville was proud of the collective grit. “This tournament showed us exactly where we’re growing and where we still need to improve,” Somerville said. “But the fight? The heart? That’s there. And that’s what’s going to matter in February.” Jeffersonville will use the lessons from Mooresville as fuel heading into next week’s competitions.
