The Raiders broke through in a big way Thursday night, defeating rival West Lafayette 4-1 in the sectional semifinals. The victory was especially meaningful, as the Red Devils had eliminated the Raiders the past two postseasons despite regular-season wins by the Raiders. The night started strong with quick points from the No. 1 doubles team (6-2, 6-2) and Clemente Martinez at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2). But closing out the match was anything but easy, as the remaining three courts all went to deciding sets or tiebreakers. The clinching point came at No. 2 singles, where Henry Graham rallied after dropping the opening set to grind out a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 comeback win. At nearly the same moment, Zan Young at No. 1 singles fought through a dramatic finish of his own, saving momentum in a second-set tiebreaker to secure a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory. West Lafayette’s lone point came at No. 2 doubles, where the Raiders fell in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. With the 4-1 win, the Raiders advance to the sectional championship, looking to claim the title in Thursday’s final.
