This past Saturday, the varsity boys cross country team fought through the heat to accomplish their goal of placing in the top 5 at the prestigious New Prairie Invitational. After placing 8th last year, the boys' sights were set on a trophy. In a field of 247 runners, Ryan Sandberg led the Wildcats with a 4th place finish, crossing the line in a 16:51 time. Chase Fajman stayed in the top 40, moving up from last year's 40th finish to 24th this year, running a 17:48. Then came the pack: Noah Hernandez took 43rd in a time of 18:20, followed by Bennett Duffy (56th) and Langdon Oldenburg (59th) in 18:35 and 18:40, respectively. Braden Flood finished in 67th with a time of 18:48; Logan Sus was 89th in 19:19. Chris Epting finished in 103rd in a time of 19:39, and Caleb Cornett rounded out the varsity roster with a 117th place finish and a time of 19:58. Luka Savich ran in the JV race, earning a place of 103rd in a time of 21:09. The team waited anxiously for the results, and hopes fell when 5th place and 4th place were announced with no mention of HC. Their combined efforts, however, shot them into the 3rd place spot, missing 2nd by only 6 points! Out of 28 teams in the 2A division, that is quite an impressive accomplishment. Way to go, HCXC!
