2026 Freeland Boys Soccer Wins District Title

By Kara Reinke | Oct 26, 2026 7:28 AM

The sun was out and anticipation was high for the District 34 championship. The Falcons traveled north to Standish-Sterling to take on the Tawas Braves, who entered the game undefeated and ranked 7th in the state in Division 3. Led by a seasoned group of seniors—Jackson Puvalowski, Ryan Harden, Austin Kloha, Travis Lloyd, Nathan Anaya, and Brady VanDaele—Freeland was ready for the challenge. As they prepared to board the bus, Puvalowski, who brought 160 minutes of district finals experience to the match, echoed a quote frequently used during the team's 2026 basketball State Championship run: “Championships are not won on the night of a big event, but years before by athletes who commit themselves daily to championship principles” (Dick Devenzio). Stepping onto the pitch for warmups, Kloha set the tone, stating, "We've put in too much work this season to settle for anything less than a win now." The Falcons took command from the opening whistle. In the first 10 minutes, a hit post, a keeper save, and a shot just wide kept Freeland scoreless, but built momentum in their attack. Anaya, who had shared his pre-game mindset to "cherish every moment," spearheaded the offense. In the 29th minute, Jon Obeso played a through ball to Anaya, who capitalized with a memorable goal to put the Falcons ahead 1-0. Freeland continued to press but held a 1-0 lead going into halftime. The second half turned into a defensive battle. Defenders Lloyd and VanDaele answered every Tawas threat. Lloyd, who noted before the game that he was playing with "a sense of pride, a shared goal, and the desire to bring a district title back to Freeland," backed up his words with confident clearances and strong team play. Freeland faced its toughest challenge with under 20 minutes remaining, but keeper Sawyer Prast made an incredible kick save to preserve the lead. As time expired, the Falcons secured their first District title since this senior class were freshmen. Reflecting on the win, VanDaele shared that he was "pumped to have another opportunity to battle with his teammates!" With the 1-0 victory, Freeland advances to the Regional Semifinals to face #1-ranked Elk Rapids in Clare on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
