Varsity vs Alma Senior High School (21 - 25) Loss Alma Stuns Freeland with Late Comeback Victory, 25-21 ALMA — Despite a dominant night on the ground, self-inflicted mistakes ultimately cost Freeland in a heartbreaking 25-21 loss to Alma. The Falcons fell behind early in the error-filled contest when they fumbled on the very first play from scrimmage. While Freeland’s defense quickly stepped up to force a three-and-out, turnover woes continued throughout the night. On their second drive, the Falcons marched 66 yards in six plays before an interception in the end zone halted the momentum. Moments later, after another defensive stand, a muffed punt handed the ball right back to Alma. Freeland finally found its rhythm in the second quarter, piecing together a 13-play, 86-yard drive. Running back Brock Geth capped it off with a 10-yard touchdown run, and a Landon Brown extra point gave Freeland a 7-0 lead. The Panthers answered after recovering a Freeland fumble—their second of the night—when quarterback Penn Seeley connected with Connor Catlin on a 17-yard score. Though the PAT was blocked, Alma kept pushing, taking a 12-7 lead on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Seeley to Mikek Gannon. Freeland struck back in just three plays as Geth punched in his second touchdown from 9 yards out, sending the teams into the locker room tied 14-14 at halftime. After a scoreless third quarter featuring an interception by Freeland’s Evan Leahy, the Falcons appeared to take control in the fourth. Geth notched his third touchdown of the evening on a 2-yard dive, pushing the lead to 21-12 with 7:05 remaining following Brown’s PAT. After the Falcon defense forced a turnover on downs, Freeland had a nine-point cushion and the ball with five minutes left. However, a fumble on the 15-yard line gave Alma new life. Seeley scored on a 1-yard keeper three plays later, cutting the lead to 21-19. A big kick return by Antonio Williams set Freeland up at the Alma 35-yard line, needing only to run out the clock. But two plays later, another lost fumble gave the Panthers one final opportunity with 2:53 on the clock. Alma seized the moment, driving 70 yards in 11 plays. With just eight seconds remaining, Seeley found a wide-open Karson Legeman in the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown, sealing a dramatic 25-21 comeback victory for the Panthers. Freeland’s powerful rushing attack controlled much of the game, racking up 349 yards on 57 carries. Geth led the charge with 169 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries, while Connor Post added 100 yards on 17 carries, and Colton Winchell chipped in 70 yards on 12 attempts. Elijah Washabaugh added 84 passing yards on 3-of-6 passing. Freeland had 8 fumbles on the night, losing 5 of them and 1 interception. Alma was led by Seeley, who completed 19 of 44 passes for 223 yards and three touchdowns, while the Panthers added 113 yards on the ground. Ike Sulfridge, Evan Leahy, and Nico Goodenough led the defense with 8 tackles each. Nico and Evan each had an interception as well. With the loss, Freeland drops to 1-5 on the season. The Falcons will look to bounce back when they host Essexville Garber next Friday night.
