Tigers Varsity Baseball Walks Off Brownsburg 1-0 After Marathon 17 Inning Game
By Matthew Cherry | May 21, 2026 6:30 AM
The Fishers Tigers Varsity Baseball Team (15-12/9-4) and the Brownsburg Bulldogs squared up in a game for the ages that lasted 17 innings and saw only 1 run score. After over 4 hours of play, Henry Cherry finally delivered the 1-out walkoff single to left field to score Vincent Pecoraro from 2nd base. The Tigers celebrated the marathon victory with a dogpile in the middle of the field. Both teams’ pitchers matched up delivering knockout punch after knockout punch. Starting pitcher Hayden Werner (7 innings) and relievers Owen Lukac (6 innings) and Grant Wolf (4 innings) combined on the 17 inning shutout, allowing only 8 hits while striking out 21 and inducing 17 groundball outs. Grant Wolf (2-2) earned the victory with 4 innings in relief. Wolf allowed only 3 base runners (a single and 2 walks) and retired 10 straight and 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. Wolf finished with 7 strikeouts. Starting pitcher Hayden Werner was outstanding in his 7 innings of work. The Bulldogs started the game with bases loaded and no outs after the first 3 batters reached on an error, a single, and a walk. Werner immediately shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to leave the bases loaded. Werner worked out of a jam in the 2nd inning as he left runners at 2nd and 3rd on an inning ending strikeout. From that point on, Werner was nearly unhittable. At one point, Werner had retired 14 out of 15 batters. Overall, Werner allowed only 4 hits while striking out 9. Owen Lukac entered in the 8th and picked up right where Werner left off. Lukac threw 6 innings during the extra frames and retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced. Lukac finished by allowing 3 hits, while striking out 5. Lukac also led the Tigers on the offensive side of the ball. He finished 3-6 with a double and a walk. Andrew Baldini contributed 2 hits. Carter Strole, David Pina, Vincent Pecoraro, and Cherry all had 1 hit. The game was filled with plenty of drama. The Tigers had runners in scoring position in 12 of the 17 innings but could not scratch the run across until the 17th. 5 of those runners in scoring position did so via the stolen base. Carter Davis stole 2 bags with Baldini, Strole, and Pecoraro each swiping 1. The Tigers also received help from the defense. Ethan Buelt doubled up the Bulldogs when he caught a fly ball in center and threw out the Bulldog runner at 3rd who was trying to tag up from 2nd. Catcher David Pina picked off a runner at 1st and also made an incredible catch on a foul ball as he crashed into the netting at the backstop. The Tigers are now winners of 7 straight and will finish their regular season on Thursday when they travel to Brownsburg for a 6:30pm start.
