Harrison wrestling coach Mark Mastison announced his intention to retire following the 2023-2024season at the conclusion at the SIAC championships on Jan. 20. His decision comes after 16 years as head coach, which were preceded by stints as an assistant under coach John Williams and coach David Mayse and all while continuing to work for the Evansville Fire Department. He was previously a referee and worked four semi-states for the IHSAA. He loved coaching and helping in every way of wrestling. Mastison had a personal record in high school of 64-24-2, was a state qualifier in 1982 and the first Harrison wrestler to place and score team points. Mastison is a graduate of the University of Indianapolis, four year varsity letter winner, team captain in 1986, and held the schools record for the fastest pin in 1982-1983 of eight seconds. Quotes from his wrestlers and former coaches “Coach Mark was the reason I came out for wrestling in the first place. Transferring schools mid-year and joining a new sport is hard, and Coach Mark was there to help me every step of the way. With his jokes, advice, and uplifting attitude towards not only me up also my teammates, he made wrestling for Harrison High School a wonderful experience. Thank you Coach Mark.” -Addison Haldeman “I met coach Mark my 7th grade year when I came to practice with the high schoolers. Since then he’s been by my side every step of the journey, pushing me to work my hardest and picking me up when I needed it most. He’s a fantastic coach and should be proud of everything he’s accomplished in his career, because all of his wrestlers are.” -Lex Mercer “Since the day I wondered into the wrestling room as a freshman, Coach Mastison put me on a journey that changed my life and I don’t know where I’d be today if he hadn’t kept me in that room.” -Micheal Roesch “When i came here in 93’ from Mater dei when i started as head coach from 93’ for john williams Mark was already a big part of their program he never left after highschool i think but mark was always available for all wrestlers he had wrestled in college very good in highschool, well known state finisher and very knowledgeable of the game there are only a few families in town that are known for their knowledge, So mark was an asset to harrison even long before he was a head coach” -David Mayse We can tell that Coach Mark touched a lot of people's hearts and definitely inspired them to do what they are doing today, so from all of us here at the EVSC Harrison Athletics, Administration, EVSC and MORE!! Thank you Coach Mark Mastison for all you have done for out wrestling program! Coach Mastison starts his last post-season run with the Warriors Saturday January 27th at Castle High School
