It's been a hot start for the DMC girls basketball team. The 4-0 Lady Knights' most recent victory came over Boone Grove on Thursday night. DeMotte dropped a staggering 52 first half points en route to a decisive 75-25 win. The Bakker twins combined for 47 points-- 29 from Sophie and 18 from Claire. Junior forward Cora Dyke added 14. This dominant performance comes on the heels of three other Knights victories over Whiting, Heritage Christian, and Victory Christian. Through four games DMC is now averaging 58 points and allowing an average of 25. While it has been a dream start for the Lady Knights, the weekend will bring a true test as Washington Township comes to town on Saturday night. The Senators will be the toughest opponent DMC has seen this season, coming off a strong 3-2 start themselves, with losses to 3A Culver Academy and 4A Hammond Central. In their three victories, Washington has knocked off Griffith, Wheeler, and Victory Christian-- the one common foe between Saturday night's competitors. The Knights defeated Victory 51-21, and the Senators 44-22. All signs point to a close game on Saturday. The Knights will need to execute on both ends of the floor to come away victorious. Washington's man-to-man defense presents a new challenge for DMC, which has primarily seen zone defense in its opening stretch. Meanwhile the stifling DeMotte defense will meet an offense the likes of which it has not seen. Washington Township has scored over fifty points twice on the season, while the Lady Knights have not given up more than 31 in a game yet. There's no doubt Sophie Bakker will be a player to watch, averaging 17.5 points on the young season. Her sister Claire is always a force, averaging twelve points and over ten rebounds. Audrey DeVries is always a Lady Knight to watch, and Allie Myers and Cassie Nanninga will contribute in the backcourt. The three players getting significant minutes off the bench have been Ella Rottier, Cora Dyke, and Emmelene Dyke. Washington Township is led by three seniors. 5'7" guard Gracie Little (#23) is the Senator's top scorer at 14 points per game, also leading the team in assists and steals with four each. Clair Klinger, a 5'4" guard wearing #3, is the next-leading scorer and leads the team with ten three-pointers made on the season. Finally, six foot center Brooklyn Campbell (#33) averages nine points and seven rebounds. For now, all eyes are on Saturday night. One team will emerge victorious and the other disappointed. Show up at 5:30 for JV or before 7:00 to make varsity!
