Your DeMotte Christian Knights are sectional champions! It was a hard-fought battle on Saturday night, but DMC emerged victorious with a 71-68 win over Kouts. Fueled by a massive crowd and an ear-splitting student section, the Knights hung on despite a late comeback from the Mustangs. Luke Terpstra led all scorers with 25 points, the most ever by a Knight in a sectional final and tied for the second most in a postseason game. Terpstra also reached 4th on the school’s all-time scoring list, with 836 career points. Tony Bos added 14, and Jayce Bultema 13. It was another balanced effort from this DeMotte team, with seven players scoring. The Knights led the majority of the game. In the third quarter the DeMotte lead was seventeen, but a late run from Kouts cut it to three. After a long final minute and a clock mishap, the Knights finally took down the Mustangs and lifted the trophy on their opponents’ floor. Luke Terpstra expressed his emotions in an interview with PC3 media, “It feels amazing, the third sectional in our school’s history– to beat a tough Kouts team. Just awesome.” Coach Ethan McCammack expressed his reaction, “It’s still a little surreal. We knew we could do it, we executed when the time came, and these guys deserve it after the year they had.” When asked how the team will celebrate, Terpstra added, “We’re gonna go to Tony’s barn and jump in the water!” I can confirm the team did go to Tony’s barn, but no one jumped in the water. With this win, the Knights have won three sectional titles in a seven-year stretch. Coach McCammack captures his first sectional in only his second season as the DMC coach. This victory also marks the Knights’ tenth in a row. More importantly, this title cements what was already a special season for DMC basketball. Nineteen wins (and counting), a conference title, and now a sectional trophy to back it all up. This week, the Knights will prepare for regionals, where they will see the Marquette Catholic Blazers. The two teams did meet in the regular season, where the Knights won at home in a 73-63 shootout. That win actually marked the first win of DMC’s ten game streak. Regionals will be at Washington High School in South Bend at 3 pm CST on Saturday, March 9th. Marquette promises to be a worthy opponent, but the team has their sights set on the very first regional title in any sport in the history of DMC/CCHS. Get your sectional champs shirt, and make your travel arrangements for next weekend. It’s a fantastic day to be a Knight. -Luke Zylstra
