After a week of soggy fields and altered practices, the Knights looked strong as they opened up the season with a 4-1 win over Morgan Township, led by Elsie Burlingham's four goals and a massive defensive effort from Marin Kingma. After losing six seniors to graduation, the Knights had a lot of spots to figure out coming into the season. After missing the scrimmage due to field conditions on Friday, the Knights had to wait to figure that out until the season opener on Monday afternoon. DeMotte Christian stepped up and answered the call as they got the first goal of the game on a through-ball from Melanie DeBoer that Burlingham chased down, controlled, and finished in the net. A similar story unfolded for the Knights second goal before the Cherokees cut the lead in half to 2-1 with about ten minutes to go in the first half. But before the first horn sounded, Burlingham capped off a first-half hat trick by netting her third goal before halftime for a 3-1 lead. Burlingham would score her fourth in the second half to earn the 4-1 victory. It was a total team effort as girls stepped up all across the field in new positions. Consistent passing and defensive efforts held Morgan Township in check. Great efforts and aggressiveness from the new freshmen was another bright spot for the Knights. DeMotte Christian now looks forward to another PCC opponent as they travel to Kouts on Friday night.
