On Saturday night, the Connersville Freshman Boys Basketball team took part in another triple header, this time against the Shelbyville Golden Bears. Coming into the contest, the boys knew they would be tested in a manner they had not been through the first 3 games. The Spartans came out with an inspired effort, trading baskets with the Golden Bears. An Andrew Miracle 3 just before the first period horn sent the Spartans into the second with an 11-9 lead. Shelbyville was able to take advantage of their size in the second quarter, capitalizing on numerous offensive rebounds leading to second chance points. Despite this, Connersville stayed within a basket, going into the half down 19-17. Coming out of the break, the Spartans made it a point to crash the boards and address something’s defensively. However, the second half did not go as previous games, as the Golden Bears were able to get rolling on offense. Connersville turned the ball over a number of times, squandering several opportunities that led to many easy baskets for Shelbyville. This trend continued into the 4th quarter. Despite a last-ditch effort push, the Golden Bears closed out the Spartans and picked up a 48-37 victory. Leading the way for the Freshman was Eli Smith with 11 points and 3 steals. Following up was Zane Ellison with 5 points and an impressive 5 steals. Also scoring 5 was Andrew Miracle, who also tallied 5 rebounds and provided a spark for the Spartans defensively. Justin Kitchen added 4 points, with 2 offensive rebounds and 3 steals. Carson Moore also finished with 4 points, chipping in 3 rebounds. Parker Brewer scored 4 for the Spartans. Gavin Mullins contributed 2 points, while grabbing 4 rebounds and recording a steal. Gavin Schneider finished with 2 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal. This moves your Spartans to 3-1 on the young season. They will be in action again on Tuesday night, when they take on the New Castle Trojans at home in the CHS Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.
