The Chelsea boys cross country team showcased depth, discipline, and outstanding progress across two days of competition at Ella Sharp Park in Jackson. Competing in the Jackson JV Invitational on Friday, September 25, followed by the Jackson Varsity Invitational (Purple Division) on Saturday, September 26, the Bulldogs capitalized on ideal racing weather and favorable course conditions to set personal and season bests down the roster. ### JV Squad Sets the Tone with Full Sweep of Personal Best Friday afternoon’s JV race set an inspiring benchmark for the weekend, as every single Chelsea runner posted a personal best. Battling through a large field of 307 runners and 16 teams—nine of which were Division 1 powerhouse programs—Chelsea claimed 11th place overall with 324 points. The JV effort was defined by smart pacing early on and aggressive finishing through the final stretch. Freshman Gabe Siler paced the squad with a breakout effort, running near-even mile splits to take 52nd place overall in 18:54.3. Freshman Elliott Armstrong followed closely behind in 82nd with a tough 19:30.2 finish. Working together through much of the 5K, Landen Coder (98th, 19:50.2) and Koen Gentner (103rd, 19:53.8) each shaved roughly a minute off their previous best times. Braedyn Borener secured the team score in 147th place with a 20:47.6 effort—a PR by over a minute. Pushing points for the team were Brandon Mowrer (174th, 21:19.2), who dropped nearly two minutes, and Hunter Wyss (218th, 22:23.8), who improved by 1:20. Thomas Means capped off the JV performance with a 32:00.7 clocking, taking a remarkable 7 minutes and 33 seconds off his previous mark. ### Varsity Boys Battle to Top-5 Finish in Packed Purple Division Riding the momentum built by the JV runners, the Varsity squad faced off Saturday morning against a loaded field in the Purple Division (500–1000 enrollment), which featured top-ranked Division 2 programs including Fort Wayne Concordia Lutheran, Parma Western, Adrian, and Otsego. Despite missing two varsity runners from the lineup, the Bulldogs rallied to earn a 5th-place team finish with 146 points. Senior Wyeth Angus led Chelsea at the front of the pack, capturing 5th place overall with a season-best time of 16:09.4. The performance marks Angus’s second-fastest time ever as he continues his dominant season, currently ranking 3rd in Region 16-2 heading into championship season. Senior Sam Clifton delivered another dependable performance, taking 19th place in 16:42.6 (SB)—his third-fastest career high school 5K—joining Angus as a top-30 medal winner. Owen Thorburn finished just outside medal contention in 31st place with a season-best 17:21.6. Preston Vasas stepped up as the team's fourth runner, dropping nearly 50 seconds to hit a season-best 17:54.3 in 45th place. George Fredenberg secured the final scoring spot in 57th with a personal-best 18:18.4, continuing his remarkable transformation into a key varsity scorer after running in the 20-minute range last fall. Charlie Fredenberg filled a crucial gap in the varsity lineup as the squad's sixth runner, placing 62nd with a PR of 18:30.5—an improvement of 54 seconds. ### Looking Ahead Now midway through the season, the coaches commended the program's strategic execution, individual growth, and team-first mindset displayed throughout the weekend. The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, September 29, at Heritage Park in Adrian for SEC Jamboree #2 (White Division). Action kicks off at 4:30 PM, where all boys will run in a single race against Adrian, Jackson, Pinckney, Tecumseh, Ypsilanti Community, and Ypsilanti Lincoln.
